New Biochemical Serum Markers of Bone Turnover in Renal Osteodystrophy
نویسندگان
چکیده
Renal osteodystrophy is a multifactorial disorder of bone remodelling that develops in patients with chronic renal failure. During the last few years numerous biochemical markers of bone turnover have been proposed for the non-invasive diagnosis of renal osteodystrophy. Several enzymes and matrix proteins produced by osteoblasts and osteoclasts, including collagen type I degradation products, have been recognized as circulating biochemical markers of both bone formation and bone resorption process. The aim of this article was to present and estimate the clinical utility of new serum markers of bone metabolism like bone specific alkaline phosphatase (bAP), procollagen type I extension peptides (PICP/PINP), osteocalcin (Oc), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), procollagen type I crosslinked carboxyterminal telopeptide (ICTP), pyridinoline (PYR), deoxypyridinoline (DPD), Cor N-terminal telopeptides of type I collagen (CTx, NTx) and other potential markers in diagnosis of renal osteodystrophy in patients with chronic renal failure.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Although lesions of renal osteodystrophy have traditionally been defined by bone turnover, alterations in skeletal mineralization and volume are also prevalent and may contribute to significant morbidity in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study presented here was undertaken to compare the traditional spectrum of renal osteodystrophy defined by bone turn...
متن کاملA Novel Study on Non-invasive Assessment of Renal Osteodystrophy among Iranian Hemodialysis Patients
Background: Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is a common bone and mineral metabolism disorder in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). This study aimed to determinate the frequency of the subtypes of ROD and evaluate the diagnostic value of biochemical as the well as radiographic markers for the diagnosis of ROD among hemodialysis patients in Golestan province of Iran. Materials and Methods...
متن کاملSerum Markers of Bone Turnover in the Diagnosis of Renal Osteodystrophy
Renal osteodystrophy (ROD) is a multifactor disorder of bone remodelling observed in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF) from very early stages (CRF stage 2) and associated with significant morbidity. The remodelling cycle in normal bone lasts from four to eight months and includes several phases: 1) An activation phase in which osteoclasts are mobilized and activated; 2) A resorption pha...
متن کاملEffects of Oral Isotretinoin on Serum Vitamin D Metabolites and Other Biochemical Markers of Bone Turnover and Calcium Homeostasis in Severe Acne
Background: Few studies have investigated on vitamin D metabolites Serum levels, and calcium homeostasis in humans receiving retinoids, despite a substantial amount of literature concerning retinoid-induced osteoporosis in animals. We prospectively measured vitamin D metabolites serum levels and calcium homeostasis and radiographic bone changes in short course treatment with oral isotreti...

Renal failure is associated with many complex bone and mineral complications. The spectrum of diseases is wide, encompassing defects in bone turnover, remodeling, and mineralization. Disease is currently defined in terms of whether a high or low turnover lesion is present. Measurement of serum parathyroid hormone levels (PTH) remains an important aspect in the management of renal bone disease, ...
